The world's biggest producer of maple syrup has nearly exhausted its strategic reserves after Americans hoarded supplies ahead of Trump's tariffs | Fortune

The organization responsible for managing the world's most significant supply of maple syrup is warning that its emergency stockpiles are nearing exhaustion. The Quebec Maple Syrup Producers expects its strategic reserve to be entirely depleted by February. This drawdown comes as a result of shifting global trade dynamics and a surge in purchasing from the United States, where buyers have been stockpiling the sweetener to avoid the financial impact of trade policies.
Quebec Strategic Reserve Capacity
While the industry continues to generate fresh product, the absence of a reserve removes a critical buffer against production volatility. Because maple sap collection is heavily reliant on specific weather conditions, output can fluctuate significantly from year to year. The strategic reserve is housed in three massive facilities across Quebec, with a total storage capacity of approximately 218,000 barrels.
Americans Hoard Syrup Ahead of Tariffs
Canadian producers have spent the last two decades diversifying their customer base. Currently, 65% of Canada's syrup exports go to the United States, a notable decrease from the 80% share recorded twenty years ago. However, a massive spike in demand occurred recently following the trade war initiated by President Donald Trump. Fearing the imposition of new tariffs, American importers aggressively purchased Canadian supplies. This rush caused total exports to surge by nearly 16% last year, a significant jump compared to the 9% growth seen in 2024.
Secure Market Supply for Coming Year
Data from Canada’s national statistics agency indicates that while exports grew by a modest 2.5% during the first eight months of 2026, production has struggled to keep pace. Last year, output dropped by 5%. Despite these challenges, Canada remains the dominant force in the industry, accounting for more than 75% of the world's maple syrup in 2025. Within Canada, Quebec is responsible for 90% of the total volume.
Simon Dore-Ouellet, deputy general manager at the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, told the Toronto Star that while the reserve is low, the immediate market supply remains stable for the next year. He emphasized that the strategic stockpile will require replenishment over the next few years and noted that a strong production season in 2027 would be highly beneficial, though producers have little control over the weather. To prepare for future demand, Quebec has increased its production capacity by 50% over the last six years, adding more than 21 million new taps to maple trees.
Reserves of KEY Commodities Dwindle
The depletion of essential reserves is a trend seen in other sectors globally. The conflict involving Iran has forced many nations to utilize their crude oil stockpiles, leading the United States Strategic Petroleum Reserve to hit its lowest point since 1982. Similarly, Japan had to tap into its rice reserves last year due to weather-related shortages and panic buying, though it
